Well the rumors can finally go hide away as Apple has finally unveiled what may end up being the most hyped-up product of the new decade. Obviously no device will ever live up to such hype and there is bound to be a bit of deflation at all the features we all dreamed of that shall not come to pass. Yet, getting back to reality, the iPad, as it is being officially called (come on Apple, iPad, really?) is a pretty slick device that, for all of its defects (and defects there are) certainly blows every other tablet computer on the market out of the water. (This makes paying $600 for a probably-never-to-be-released JooJoo tablet look like an even worse idea than it did before).
We will have commentary and thoughts in the coming days and weeks and of course will discuss the iPad on this week’s episode.
For those of you sick of iMadness, we have quite a bit of other interesting news and commentary as well.

No front facing camera, no GPS (I think??) makes me a little frustrated and nervous about being a first adopter….what are the odds that there’ll be an iPad “3GS” version in a year or two that will make this version as obsolete as my jailbroken iPhone 1G?

I’d say that is a very good possibility. Apple has a history of releasing good initial products that leave you wanting and then following them up with far better versions in years to come. Think about the original iPod or iPhone? You could tell it was a cool device, but there was an awful lot wanting. I suspect that, in particular, there will be some major changes to the iPhone OS going forward to handle some of the more advanced capabilities of this device.

The presentation was a little underwhelming, but given the unprecedented hype leading up to this event that was unavoidable.
The backlash against the device by the tech community has been pretty interesting in it’s vitriol. But as usual that probably boils down to us geeks forgetting we aren’t the target demographic.
Not terrible for a V1 launch, but I probably won’t consider picking one up until version 2 lands.

@kyth. Agreed. The tech industry seems unsure whether it hates the device or loves it (I have seen roughly equal numbers of both today). I think honestly both the loving and hating is way overblown. It is unquestionably an excellent device, both from a hardware and software perspective, but as you say, it is clearly a v1.0 launch product. It is clear that they plan on going somewhere with this product and that they have big plans for it. It is going to be a slow revolution.
